Homecoming Nails: How to Plan Your Set So It's Ready Before the Dance

October 2, 2026

Two hands with long pointed nails finished in dark tips, crossed in front of a bunch of carnations, in a green-tinted video frame

Homecoming week, almost everybody who sits down asks the same thing. “What should I get?” Usually they’ve got a phone full of saved nail photos and a dress picture somewhere in the camera roll. Good. That’s exactly where to start.

The set in this clip is long and pointed with dark tips, held up next to the flowers. Classic dance look. So let me walk you through planning one so it’s done, set, and ready for pictures before the big night.

When to come in

Don’t leave it for the afternoon of the dance. A day or two before is the sweet spot. Your nails are fresh for photos, and if one needs a touch-up there’s still time to fix it without anybody panicking.

Homecoming weekend gets busy. We take walk-ins seven days a week, but if you have a time in mind, book online so it’s held for you. Coming with a group of friends? Book that too, so you’re all done together.

Acrylic, Gel-X, builder gel or shellac

You’ll hear all four names at the front desk. They’re different jobs.

Acrylic is the go-to for real length and a sharp shape, like the long points in the video. It’s strong and holds an almond or stiletto tip well.

Gel-X uses pre-shaped soft gel tips that get bonded on and cured. It adds length fast and tends to feel lighter on the hand.

Builder gel goes over your own nails. It adds strength and a little length. Nice if your natural nails are in decent shape and you want polished, not dramatic.

Shellac is color on your natural nails with no added length. Simplest to wear for one weekend.

Which one fits depends on your nails, how long you want the set to last after the dance, and how comfortable you are with length. That’s a quick conversation once I see your hands. If you’ve never worn long nails, give yourself a day or two to get used to them. Phone, buttons, earrings. It all feels different at first. And ask how removal works for whatever you pick, so you’re not picking at it the Monday after.

Matching the dress and the flowers

Bring the dress picture. Color matters, but so does the feel of it. A sparkly dress usually wants a quieter nail. A plain satin dress can handle chrome, glitter or a bold tip.

Think about the corsage or boutonniere too. Your hands are going to be in every photo right next to those flowers. A neutral base with a dark or metallic tip, like this set, goes with nearly anything.

Don’t forget your toes. Open-toe heels or sandals put your feet in the pictures too. A shellac pedicure in a matching or neutral shade holds up through a night of dancing.

Ask what your set will cost before we start. Length, shape and art all change the price, and a full set plus a pedicure is a different job than a simple polish. I’d rather you know the number up front.
